Today we began our first book group of third grade. Each group is reading a novel that centers around the theme of friendship. Ask us which book we are reading and what we think of our story so far!
We sure do LOVE pep rally days! We ended the day with lots of school spirit. Luckily, we also got some learning done today! This morning we got our new vocabulary words. Using what we know about word parts we were able to create these very informative word cards to help both ourselves and our classmates learn some new vocabulary!
One of the best ways to find new books is through recommendations from a friend. Today we learned how to use kidblog to record our book recommendations for others to read! By logging into www.kidblog.org/academy3a and putting in the password Vikings3a we can read about books that our friends enjoyed reading!
Today we got our first vocabulary packet. We talked about how knowing what the root of a word means can help us figure out what the whole word might mean. We are excited to show off our skills on our first vocabulary test next Wednesday.
We also prepared for our first math test. This math test will focus on place value. We practiced in many different ways and are feeling ready for the test tomorrow!
This afternoon we celebrated Nicholas's birthday. We enjoyed some delicious cookies and listened to the story Something from Nothing read by Nicholas's dad. We really enjoyed having his family here and hope Nicholas has a sensational day!
Today we met with our first grade buddies. Our buddies are studying the different versions of The Little Red Hen. We read The Little Red Hen Makes a Pizza together and then we made mini-pizzas! What a great way to end the day.
This afternoon we welcomed our first mystery reader of the year - Nicholas's Nana Sue! Nana Sue is visiting from South Carolina and was nice enough to stop in to read Amos and Boris, a wonderful story about friendship.
From place value to personal narratives, we have been a busy bunch! Ask us about the stories we are writing and how we are revising the lead to pull our readers in.
Our first theme is underway. We began our friendship unit by reading two stories: Gloria Who Might Be My Best Friend and Angel Child, Dragon Child. Each of these stories had an important message. Ask us what we learned!
An important part of our first unit is learning to respond to short answer questions in full sentences. We now know that we should restate the question at the beginning of each answer. This expectation will carry throughout the year so it's a good thing we are practicing early!
Follow our class as we learn and grow in third grade.
