Yesterday we formed a mining team and began a California Gold Rush simulation! Our goal is to get through a series of challenges and make it to California to earn as much gold as possible. During the simulation we will learn about the gold rush and write journal entries as if we were real miners headed west. Ask us about what we've done so far!
We have been working hard to master fractions, particularly improper fractions and mixed numbers.
Aside from fractions, we have been busy researching the California Gold Rush. Ask us what it means to "hit pay dirt!"
Last Saturday Gavin turned 10. Today we got to celebrate with him in class! His mom shared two funny stories and he told us about his special day. We were so jealous that he got an ipad mini! Then he passed out some delicious cookie cake for us to share. Happy Birthday Gavin!
This afternoon we celebrated Jacob's ninth birthday. We got an extra special treat when his grandparents and his dog Rider joined us for the celebration! Not only did we get to meet Jacob's puppy, we also heard about how he hopes to get an ipad mini and his feelings about sharing his day with his twin brother (who is one minute older!) Happy Birthday Jacob!
This morning we launched a our new unit by visiting an "art gallery." We walked through the hall viewing 8 different pictures depicting some aspect of the gold rush. We read the captions and wrote down our observations and inferences which we later discussed as a group. We really enjoyed learning outside the classroom walls and we can't wait to find out more about the California Gold Rush!
This afternoon we began a study of poetry. Our creativity ran wild as we explored the structure of an anaphora poem.
Today we celebrated Chase's ninth birthday. He shared his new iPad mini and told us about the other neat gifts he got for his birthday this past weekend. It sounded like he had a great time at the Cheesecake factory! Then we shared a delicious cookie cake while his parents read "Happy Birthday Moon," which was a really funny story. Thanks for sharing with us Chase! Happy Birthday!
Over the past few weeks we have been working with a small group to complete a project based on a story we read about money. Today we got to present our projects for each other and for our first grade buddies.
We also got to share in the accomplishments of those who chose to complete the money extension project. Their hard work was wonderful to see, we could tell they learned a lot!
This morning we celebrated Talia's birthday. We loved hearing what she hoped to get for her birthday (a flat brimmed hat), her plans to celebrate with her family, and listening to her mom read a birthday book to our class. We also enjoyed the yummy cookie cake that she brought for us to share. Happy 9th birthday Talia!
We have been working hard in music to master the recorder. Today we showed off our hard work during the Lower School assembly. Thank you to everyone who joined us to share in our musical accomplishments!
Today we watched a video short about fractions.
Now we are going to create our own! We are in the planning stages right now, but stop by soon to see the final products.
Don't forget that we will be performing at assembly tomorrow!
Follow our class as we learn and grow in third grade.
